Best Wet Cat Food

The best wet cat food is the one your cat will eat! This might sound insincere, but with the exception of some of the “junk food” out there, it is true. It is because cats are culinary creatures of habit, of which they develop as kittens. For this reason, I advise clients with kittens to expose them to a wide variety of different types and brands of food. These cats are then less picky and more likely to eat the type of foods that are able to treat diseases that develop later in life. These specialized formulas are definitely the best wet cat food for felines with specific treatable conditions.
Three Reasons Clients Are Afraid To Feed Their Cat Wet Food
- They are concerned about weight gain. Wet canned food will only make your cat fat if it eats too much of it! It is always important to ensure you are not over feeding your cat with any food.
- They are concerned with plaque and tartar formation. Many clients believe an all-kibble diet will help control plaque and tartar build up in their cat. But since cats do not really chew their food (they take one or two bites then throw the food to the back of the mouth to swallow) feeding 7 dry kibbles of food would have the same plaque and tartar controlling effect as feeding an all kibble diet. I advise clients to feed a small amount of dry kibble daily (NOT allowing free access to it) as a snack. Make sure to account for this when determining the amount of wet food to feed your cat.
- They think it will give their cat diarrhea because it has more water. The colon and kidneys are designed to remove water from everything cats eat and drink. Extra water is passed in the urine, not the stool. Canned food can have more fat in it, which can cause diarrhea if the cat is not used to it. Any food can cause diarrhea if we do not slowly switch foods over about a week (add 10% new food and subtract 10% old food each day until completely switched). If a cat has developed diarrhea on a wet food, the transition to the new food was too abrupt or the cat has an underlying disease.
Three Reasons Why You Should Feed Your Cat Wet Food
- Cats can get better use of the energy from wet food, lowering the risk of diabetes. The best wet food for cats will generally be higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates, which slowly releases sugars in the body. Dry kibble is high in carbohydrates and lower in protein, which causes a spike in sugar after eating.
- There is more water in wet food. Having more water in a cat’s diet helps reduce the likelihood ofdeveloping urinary tract issues in cats. The latest wet cat foods can even help treat certain diseases that cause cats to urinate outside of the litter box.
- Wet foods may lessen allergic responses in your cat. Processing increases the allergenic potential of any cat food; the more it’s processed, the higher the risk. Home cooking is less allergenic than wet food, which is less allergenic than dry food. If you have a cat with skin or intestinal issues, using wet food may help.
